Clean Slate

One good thing about not falling in love is that you'll have many chances to succeed and fail at it. Each day is a brand new opportunity.

You might even reach the point where you look forward to not falling in love. You’ll know that on certain days of the week at specific times, you will be tempted. And after figuring out a strategy or other preventive measures, you’ll be prepared to face that temptation.

It will obviously get better with time. The goal is to one day be completely surprised that you’re in love with a wonderful someone that loves you back and you didn’t see it coming. You didn’t plan, over-analyze, or obsess about the relationship before it began. You never imagined you could be in a relationship this good. There was no wasting of time or embarrassment or calling up all of your friends and talking about him before you even knew his name.

You want to be amazed the day he calls, the day he asks you out, the day he proposes.

Go out there and fail today. Fail tomorrow. Continue on this path until you get something right. The funny part is that you won’t even notice when you are succeeding. You’ll just be free.

Love,

  1. Yes, it should feel completely natural when you fall in love. But why do they use the word "fall"? Could it mean that love is not rational and couldn't be perfected even if we try? Hmmm...

    Good post!

  2. I've always loved the title of C.S. Lewis's book "Surprised by Joy" about meeting and falling in love with his wife, Joy. That's the way it should be!

  3. I am trying not to fall in love while secretly hoping that I will be surprised someday! What an irony! :P
